Every question we hear before a first note.
Holders, general counsel, operators and advisers tend to ask the same things. Here they are, answered plainly. If yours is missing, ask through the contact form and a partner will answer it directly.
About the desk
What does Hush Partners do?
We run discreet negotiations for onchain top-level domains. On the sell side we represent holders who want to sell a TLD without listing it. On the buy side we represent organizations that want to acquire a TLD, often one matching their own name, from whoever holds it. Valuation, approach, negotiation, escrow and activation after transfer are all handled by the same desk. See all services.
What is an onchain top-level domain?
A TLD such as .yourname registered on the Freename registry and recorded onchain as a token held in a wallet. Whoever holds the token controls the TLD and is the only one who can issue names under it. There is no annual renewal. Our complete guide covers the details.
Why is nothing listed on this site?
A listed TLD loses value and draws noise, and a TLD that matches an organization is a statement about that organization. We discuss assets with the parties concerned, privately, and nowhere else. It is the first of our rules of engagement.
Do you only handle onchain TLDs?
They are the core of the desk. Premium web2 domains and other digital assets that need a quiet negotiation go through the same process. See other digital assets.
Selling
I hold a TLD. Where do I start?
With a private valuation. You tell us the TLD, we verify ownership onchain and come back in writing with what it is worth, to whom, and how we would approach them. No commitment, no listing.
Do I have to give you exclusivity?
No. We never impose exclusivity on holders. If another intermediary already has a mandate, tell us and we will say whether it makes sense to work alongside them. Third-party mandates are accepted.
Will the buyer learn who I am?
Not from us. The buyer deals with Hush Partners and with the partner on your file. Your identity stays out of every note, call and private room. The wallet address is public on the registry, which is why we tell you upfront what an onchain record can and cannot hide.
What happens if the organization says no?
The approach ends. A clear no is final and we do not chase, re-send or escalate over someone's head. We then talk with you about the other buyers on the map, if there are any.
Can I keep issuing subnames while the TLD is being sold?
We ask you not to. Nothing is issued under a TLD while it is under discussion, because a buyer should receive exactly what was described. If names already exist, they are disclosed in the file before any approach. Read more on sell-side mandates.
Acquiring
Our name is held as a TLD by someone else. What can we do?
Send a confidential brief. We check the onchain record, what has been issued under the TLD, and who is likely behind the wallet. Then we tell you what is possible and approach the holder on your behalf if you decide to go ahead. See brand namespace recovery.
Will the holder know who is asking?
Not until you decide. On a buy-side acquisition, the holder speaks to Hush Partners. Your organization's name is disclosed only when you tell us to, usually at signature.
We received a note from Hush Partners. Is it genuine?
Every note carries a reference like HP-7C2A and a link to a private room. The room links to the public onchain record, so you can verify every fact before replying. If anything looks off, tell us through the contact form with the reference. See received a note.
Is this a legal dispute?
We run negotiations. Hush Partners is not a law firm and gives no legal advice. Questions about trademarks or rights in a name belong with your counsel, and we are happy to work alongside them. Our note for brands and legal teams explains how.
Escrow & transfer
How is payment secured?
Through marketplace escrow: the Freename aftermarket by default, OpenSea or another venue if you prefer. Funds and TLD move together, or nothing moves. Neither side has to trust the other with money or keys. Details on escrow and transfer.
How do we know the TLD is clean?
Before any terms, we check the onchain record with you: current holder, transfer history, subnames issued and any listing. The private room links to each record so you can check it yourself. Your counsel handles anything that goes beyond the record.
Does a TLD need renewing?
No. A TLD on Freename is a token in a wallet. There is no registrar renewal and no annual fee. Resolution works through Freename's resolution layer and compatible wallets and browsers, outside the standard ICANN DNS root.
What happens after the transfer?
The TLD is yours and the namespace arrives as described. Many new holders then publish verified names like pay.yourname or treasury.yourname, and identities for their agents. We can set that up. See post-transfer activation and the launch roadmap.
Confidentiality
Will anyone hear about the deal?
Not from us, before or after closing. We never publish a TLD, a client or a counterparty. If the new holder wants to announce the name, that is their decision, on their timing.
Do you sign NDAs?
Yes, by default, on both sides of every file. Our standard NDA applies from your first message and continues after closing, and your counsel can review it before you write.
What is a private room?
An unlisted, noindex page at a tokenized link, prepared for one approached organization. It shows the onchain record, what they would hold, the validity date of the terms, the partner's first name and the file reference. Nothing on the site links to it.
Do you publish closed deals or case studies?
No. Not before, during or after closing, and not even in redacted form. A firm that shows its files tells you how it will treat yours.
Fees
How much does it cost?
There is no price list, and we never take a commission on a sale. Hush Partners charges a fixed fee for the service, quoted privately and in writing before anything is signed. It depends on the asset and the work involved, never on the sale price.
How does Hush Partners get paid?
Through a shaka payment link, onchain, for the fee agreed in writing. That fee is separate from the sale: the price of the asset moves only between buyer and seller, in escrow. If an adviser introduced you, their share is split from our fee on the same link.
Who pays Hush Partners?
Whoever gives us the mandate: the holder who asks us to find a buyer, or the organization that asks us to find and approach a holder. It is a fixed amount written into the mandate, not a percentage. If you are answering a note from us, or buying a TLD we offer, you pay the price of the TLD and no fee. We never take a fee from both sides of a file.
Is anything due before closing?
Whatever applies is set out in the mandate before signature, so nothing arrives as a surprise later. A first valuation carries no commitment.
Do advisers who refer a file get paid?
Yes. Lawyers, IP counsel and wealth advisers who introduce a file receive a referral split paid onchain at closing through shaka.deal. The terms are agreed privately before the introduction. See for advisors.
